The New Pornographers at the Apple Store in Soho

Last night, the roommate and I went to see The New Pornographers at the Apple store in Soho. They played an hour long set. Neko is gorgeous in person. Here’s a (admittedly not so great quality) video I managed to get of them singing “My Rights Versus. Yours.” The hour long set was pretty good, except the acoustics weren’t so hot from where we were standing all the way in the back. “Challengers” sounded awesome, though. Neko and Carl rock.

Alex Haldi – “Vices”

Alex Haldi

Up-and-coming New York City artist Alex Haldi had a opening Tuesday night at the Lower East Side’s Plan B.  With great hip-hop complementing the unique urban style of Haldi’s work, the place was packed with ultra hipsters in goofy sunglasses, and young professionals in sport coats.

Titled “Vices,” this was the first public showing for the Def Jam graphic designer whose art is a combination of painting, illustration, and collage.  Drawing from urban elements including sky-scapes, graffiti, and scantily-clad women, Haldi has successfully developed a style of his own.

The venue was a great place to display this type of art, and his work was well received by the diverse, typically pretentious and hard-to-please crowd.  My Jack and Coke was well-mixed, and so was the music, which made for a perfect night for great art.

“Vices” will be up all month long, so definitely swing by Plan B (10th St between Ave. A and B) in New York’s Lower East Side and check it out.  You don’t want to be the last schmuck with stubble and Nikes to know about this buzz-worthy artist.

Front & Center – Having searched coffeehouses and acoustic cafes around the world, DJ Jeff K brings the best singer/songwriters ready to break the mold here on BTR. Val Emmich, Krystal Warren, Amber Rubarth, and Jason Myles Goss get their shot…and they make it count.
