New Album Releases

Owen PallettHeartland
January 12 (Domino)

Casting aside his Final Fantasy moniker for his own name, Owen Pallett is looking for a fresh start with his first Domino release, Heartland. According to Owen, “The songs themselves form a narrative concerning a farmer named Lewis and the fictional world of Spectrum. The songs are one-sided dialogues with Lewis, a young, ultra-violent farmer, speaking to his creator.” Could this album be as biblical as Final Fantasy III? Try and gather some clues by listening to the songs already available on-line, and keep an ear open for guest spots from Nico Muhly, Gentleman Reg, and Arcade Fire drummer Jeremy Gara.

Surfer BloodAstro Coast
January 19 (Kanine)

With their name already chiseled into CMJ lore, Surfer Blood are looking to show off their ferocious surf-pop skills to the rest of the nation. I can attest to their punchy hooks, but they’re still a bit wet behind the ears as far as stage presence is concerned. Maybe they’ll pick up a thing or three from upcoming tour mates Monotonix. Said tour stretches into March, with dates reserved for ravaging SXSW. Watch your back Austin.

Free EnergyStuck On Nothing
January 26 (DFA)

With a multitude of bodies flocking down to the dumps, the world is in desperate need of more party riffs. Free Energy is the good-time Philly band looking to deliver. Their debut on DFA features the band’s anthem, which sums them up perfectly, and reworked Hockey Night songs that received the ole’ studio shine. They also give one hell of an interview. Look for them to invade major cities on a two month tour with Foreign Born.

Listen up for music from all of these albums here on BTR!!!
