It seems as if Blau has quite a bit on his plate and amazingly he gets it all done with talent and precision. His latest achievement, an album entitled Zebra which was released on K Records in October of this year. Zebra, his fifth studio album, was recorded at Dub Narcotic in Olympia, Washington and features elements of jazz, Afrobeat, R&B, folk and soul. Blau has been greatly influenced by music of African decent and created this album as a way to “pay (his) respects to influences of African people and people of African heritage.”
The album does a superb job of blending folk and Afrobeat and transitions smoothly between the light and heavy, bright and dark sounds found on its 12 tracks. There are many beautifully layered instruments found in each song and Blau’s full, unique, and compelling voice masterfully belts out every word.
Blau’s voice and sound can be a bit peculiar at first but become comforting and familiar the more you listen. Zebra is an album that gets better with every listen as there is always something new to hear or discover within its many layers.
