She has recorded tracks with Kanye West, Estelle, and David Banner. She has also received a BET award nomination in the category of “Best Female Hip-Hop Artist” and been featured on the MTV show My Block. All of this success and the Chicago, Illinois based hip-hop artist, Kid Sister has yet to release her highly anticipated debut album.
In fact, to say that this debut album, entitled Ultraviolet, is highly anticipated is an understatement. Since the 2007 release of her buzz-single “Pro-Nails”, which features Kanye West, fans and critics alike have been awaiting the Downtown Record’s release which contains the track. “Pro-Nails” and her recently released single “Right Hand Hi” have both been receiving much praise and critical acclaim. Ultraviolet‘s release has been pushed back numerous times since 2007. In fact, it had a fairly concrete release date just last week. However, now it seems that the date is November 17, 2009 and it is fairly certain this release date will stick, as Kid Sister is going on tour in support of the album.
The tour kicks off on October 16th in Vancouver, British Columbia. Joining Kid Sister on stage for a smattering of the dates, which run through the end of November, will be Flosstradamus. Josh “J2K” Young (half of the duo Flosstradamus) is the brother of Kid Sister (aka Melisa Young). In fact the two have teamed up for years to bring their energy and charisma to the stage. Kid Sister puts on a raucous live set, as she has demonstrated on the stages of SXSW, the Pitchfork Music Festival, and Coachella.
Her fresh and fun hip-hop sound is infectious, as is Kid Sister herself. She does an excellent job of drawing the crowd in and connecting with her audience. One would be hard pressed to find a single stop on her tour where the entire crowd was not jumping up and down to the beat and rapping along at the top of their lungs. A Kid Sister show is a dance party and just as she will be expending every ounce of energy on stage, the crowd will feel compelled to expend all of their energy as well.
Keep listening to BreakThru Radio for tracks from Kid Sister and be sure to catch her on her live tour (dates below)! Also, be sure to pick up her debut album out on Downtown Records and in stores on November 17, 2009.
