Zillionaire: Live at Wayward Counsil in Gainesville, Fl

zillionaire435.jpg

Wayward Council is a small, rectangular space, with nary a stage or separation between band and audience. To put it in perspective, a track athlete could probably jump from one side to the other in a single bound, and the place would be hard-pressed to fit the length of a bowling lane, going the other way. And the lone bathroom is actually at the back of the room, right behind the drum kit, so ain’t no one going when a band is performing. Although the atmosphere of the show was intimate to the point of Kindergarten story time, the sound of the room didn’t quite suit the beautifully expansive songcraft of Zillionaire. Their music needed room to breathe, like a good red wine.

That structural gripe aside, however, it was a rewarding set to soak up, as the proof of the music was not affected.

First off,  the order of songs was excellent. They began with the sighing/slow-tightening tug of war “I Won’t Let You Down (This Time)”, which christens their debut album The Street Lights Have Been Turned Down. Vocalist/rhythm guitarist Heath Dupras, singing in a somewhat emotionally detached voice, ordered someone to “load their shotgun”, and “make sure its loaded, you don’t want to miss this chance”.  Then, he capped it off by noting “I won’t miss you, but I’m sure someone will.”

It’s hard not to use Gravenhurst as a reference point here, due to the words and mood of the song. The same for goes for the track “Three Ghosts”, which had the crowd rapt.  Both bands have a knack for utilizing macabre lyrics to hurl already overcast accompaniments into pitch black depths. Unlike Gravenhurst, however, Zillionaire songs tend to have cheerier second halves, and sunnier moods in general. As dark as “I Won’t Let You Down (This Time)” and “Three Ghosts” began, the endings proved optimistic.

Backroom Blues – This month’s mix is a truly transcending experience. DJ RePete pushes blues to its limits with Sharon Jones & the Dap Kings, Micheale Mazochi, The Dynamites feat. Charles Walker, and Pete Pigeon and Arcoda. Keep a special ear out for Entrance.

Jam Session – DJ Laura crafts an especially delightful mix of jam music’s heaviest hitters. Friday, November 17 is for F*** Yeahs

+0000c30obeFri, 16 Nov 2007 19:40:13 +0000 22, 2007 · No Comments

The Restless
BTR Live Studio – DJ Jeff K brings you New York indie rock band The Restless. This quartet shakes things up without the annoying weirdness so be sure to check out this Live Studio plus their upcoming shows in December and January.

The Synapse – If you find yourself scrambling for those umbrellas and gloves lately in this chilling NY weather, make sure you take some time to heat up with DJ Latola and his warming mix. Latola’s recruited Arms and Sleepers, Taken By Trees, The Dynamites, Destroyer, The Brunettes and many more to battle Old Man Winter, so enjoy the show!

BPs Wang Dang Doodle – Resident BTR sage, BP Fallon, graces your ears today and introduces Toronto band Bedouin Soundclash as his band of the week. The Stabilisers, Semi Precious Weapons, Kenny Kenny, and The Detroit Cobras also contribute some songs to this look into BP’s music-loving “Bionic Heart.”

Latin Hip Hop – DJ Santero brings the spiciest in Reggaeton and Latin Hip Hop today. In addition to Vico C, Wisin & Yandel, and Franco de Vita, Santero answers requests for Dominican hip hop and keeps the rhythms coming for those who know what’s up.

All Access – Forget “The Wonder Years” because Kevin Arnold ain’t got nothing on these teens featured today. Frans Mernick, Pink Shoelaces, Sam Bell, The Blue Addictions, and Short Circuit bring you the best in music from under-20-year-olds. Rock, rap, R&B, and plenty more variety tell us the feature will still be kickin’.

Matt & Emily – Discuss family and Matt’s dorkness with the adorable duo today. Sea Wolf (BTR’s AOTW), Nellie McKay, Destroyer, The Cat Empire, and Binky Griptite and the Mellomatics will be there. Fridays are for parties.

Rock Block – DJ Darkside caters to some of the other colors of the “Rock Rainbow” in today’s show. Hard and with an edge, Comanchero, The Matt Pistol Project, Ion, 4” Stud, and Shaolin Temple of Boom kick the crap out of your ears. This is definitely not your Monday morning mix.

Revolver – Remind us music is alive and well, DJ Wynn! Ghostland Observatory, Hot Hot Heat, Broken Social Scene, Of Montreal, and Stars fit the bill to a T. Get your ass moving rhythmically up and down with slight mid-air drifts side to side.

Remix Hour – DJ Pat features Breakup Breakdown, personally re-mixing their awesome song “Incestuous.” Stick around for Pleasurecraft, Shock Cinema, Telefon Tel Aviv, and so many more awesome artists and re-mixers because these songs really are double the fun!

 This Recording

Another week, another new blogger!  This week, we’ve got the fine folk from This Recording.  Be sure to check out yesterday’s hilarious post, written by contributor Tess Lynch, about certain conversations you’ll have more than once in your life - including which Sex and the City (females) or Entourage (males) character you are most like, the stupidity/validity of the Atkins diet, the Beatles, the White Stripes, and of course, Flight of the Conchords.  In fact, the majority of the post discusses the recent obsession with Flight of the Conchords, so whether you’re a fan or a hater, you need to check this out.

Today’s post, written by Alex Carnivale, touches once again on Flight of the Conchords, but focuses on a story about our hero attending a Vampire Weekend concert.  Blogging gold right there.  Go read it. Now! :)

A Bag of Updates!

Bag of Songs

Bag of SongsHello, all.  It is Monday and we are back at work. *Some* of us had a crazy weekend of airport adventures (see below).  But anyway, I’m here to announce this week’s BOTW - Tom from Bag of Songs.  Check out his awesome blog AND check out his post on BTR today - a review on The Swimmers.  The Swimmers are a band out of Philly and he calls their album the “call one of the first truly important releases of 2007.”  So be sure to check it out!

Next up, we’ve got this week’s Artist of the Week - Luckyiam.PSC (pronounced “lucky i am”).  Be sure to read DJ Emily’s article on him and pick up his new album Most Likely To Succeed, which is out this week.

Also, we read this story this morning on Brooklyn Vegan.  I was also at LaGuardia Airport ALL DAY on Saturday, a victim of the oversold flight disaster.  CSS missed their concert at Lollapalooza and I missed my roommate’s wedding.  United Airlines blows chunks.  I was also delayed for 2.5 hours back from Chicago on my way home at 6am Sunday morning & missed my connecting flight. I am officially calling for a boycott of UA!
